Amparo Perez |
Hi Everyone! My name is Amparo Perez, and I am a first-generation minority graduate. I graduated as an undergrad at Roosevelt University in 2019. After this significant accomplishment, I had a fantastic opportunity to continue at Roosevelt by becoming the Science Peer Advisors Coordinator for two years. Throughout this time, I also continued my studies and received my Masters in Biomedical Science in the Spring of 2021. Currently, I am working at Lurie Children’s Hospital as a Clinical Research Coordinator in the Pediatric Surgery department. My career goal in life is to become a pediatrician, and as I continue my journey towards Medical School, I always reflect on my time with SPA. As a Science Peer Advisor, I had the opportunity to guide other students towards a successful undergraduate journey, and in turn, I gained knowledge and mentorship from the students and faculty involved in the program. Their assistance towards my academic journey and their ongoing support played a major factor in how far I have come today and the strength I have built to keep moving forward in accomplishing my career goals.

Hi everyone! My name is Emily Wielgus and I was a mentor for Science Peer Advising for 3 years. I'm from a small town in Indiana so when I moved to Chicago as a freshman I knew no one. I was worried about meeting people at first but SPA has provided me with such a great support system and team to work with all three years. I played soccer at Roosevelt for my first two years and I was apart of the sorority Alpha Gamma Delta as well so I had a lot of different perspectives on college other than being an out of state student. My undergrad major was biology and I'm currently in the 3 + 3 program for pharmacy school. The spring of 2022 I got accepted into Roosevelt's College of Pharmacy and I am starting in the Summer of 2022! I'm super glad to continue my education with Roosevelt University to stay within such a great community. SPA has been a great opportunity for me to be apart of, to help support my others, and grow my leadership skills. Helping people and sharing advice are two big passions in my life so Spa was a great way to use both of those and I plan to continue to use those within my pharmacy career. If you ever have any questions about pharmacy school, doing an accelerated program, being a student athlete.

My name is Grace Hahn, and I will be a senior in the 2022-2023 academic year. I am studying Biochemistry and Psychology with hopes of attending medical school after graduation and becoming a pediatrician or pediatric ER physician. I am so grateful for the experiences I gained being a SPA mentor this past year; not only did I gain experience being a resource for my peers pursuing similar paths in science, but I also gained invaluable knowledge of how to work with my fellow mentors on a variety of different projects and assignments. I thoroughly enjoyed working with my fellow mentors who are incredible students and people who not only became better friends of mine, but also pushed and continue to push me to be the best version of myself every day. It was reassuring that even though we were mentors, that we also were able to mentor and support each other. After all, we were students too! My favorite part of being a SPA mentor by far was discovering how every student’s path at Roosevelt is intertwined with at least a few others in their area of study. No matter how challenging a student’s college experience can be, whether that involves attending classes part time while working full time, living away from home for the first time, or balancing home/family life with student life, no student is alone in their experience. I was honored to be someone who had the opportunity to positively impact my peers and show them that no matter the difficulties they were facing, the SPA office is always open to them and there is always someone there to listen, and more importantly, wants to be there in whatever way they can.

Hi! My name is Leslie, I’m a first-generation college graduate, I graduated from RU back in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I was a peer mentor for SPA for about 5 months, of which I can easily say was an unforgettable experience for me. After graduation it has been quite a journey for me, from applying to dental school to working as a dental assistant to currently working with Northwestern Medicine as a research coordinator for their cardiovascular department. But despite all the ups and downs that I have come across these past two years, my overall goal and dream is to become a dentist.

Hello everyone! My name is Tatiana Sosa and I am a first generation student. I graduated from RU in the spring of 2022 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology. I was also a pre-PA student so aside from on campus jobs such as peer tutoring and science peer advising, I worked as a CNA on the weekends. I was a part of SPA for the last two semesters of my college journey and it was such a great experience – being able to help others was something I knew I wanted to do because it granted me, as well as other mentors, the opportunity to provide a support system for students who needed it. After graduation, I plan to take a gap year where I will begin a pre-PA internship at Northwestern Medicine and continue to work as a CNA to better my application for future PA programs! If you ever have any questions whether they are pre-PA related, undergrad related or SPA related – feel free to reach out! I wish everyone the best on their journeys! You got it!!

Victoria lopez
Hi my name is Victoria Lopez, I graduated from Roosevelt University with a B.S. in Biochemistry. During my time at Roosevelt, I had many great mentors, including Dr. Cordeiro, Dr. Onajole, and Dr. Poulson-Ellestad. I was one of the founding members of the SPA program and was active in SPA until I graduated in 2021. My favorite thing about the SPA program was that the SPA mentors truly cared about helping their peers, and I am proud to have been a part of the program’s beginning. Currently, I am a PhD student at Indiana University Bloomington dual majoring in biology and neuroscience. After completing my PhD, I plan to pursue an industry career path.
